20 YEARS AGO ( OMG – IS IT THAT LONG??) I WORKED ON A SHOOT THAT WAS PUBLISHED IN AMERICAN VOGUE, SHOT BY THE WONDERFUL ART PHOTOGRAPHER WOLFGANG TILLMANS AND THE FOREVER BEAUTIFUL KATE MOSS.
TODAY IS KATE MOSS’S BIRTHDAY SO TO CELEBRATE THIS ICONIC BRITISH MODEL’S BIRTHING DAY, I’M SHARING WITH YOU THIS SHOOT AND A LITTLE STORY ABOUT THE DAY.
So we’re talking 1997 and it was the era when art photography really started to cross over into fashion.
Wolfgang Tillmans is a German art photographer born in Remschied in 1968.
He was the first non English photographer to be awarded the Tate annual Turner Prize in 2000, and is a member of the Royal Academy of Arts living in Berlin and London, Between 2009 and 2014 he served as an Artist Trustee of the Tate Board. He is also a member of the museum’s Collection Committee and the Tate Britain Council.
He has published numerous books of his work and his other awards include:
- 2009:Kulturpreis der Deutschen Gesellschaft fur Photographie (The Culture Prize of the German Society for Photography).
- 2014: Charles Wollaston Award, the main prize of the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition
- 2015: Hasselblad Award, Hasselblad Foundation, Gothenburg, Sweden.
- 2015: Royal Photographic Society Centenary Medal and Honorary Fellowship.
This shoot with Kate took place in Wolfgangs flat in London, and I remember it being a fun day. It was a new experience to work with somebody like Wolfgang, who had a different approach to fashion.
He shot on traditional film ( no digital back then) and so he could see the images, he had the film developed at his local Snappy Snaps on a 2 hour development then would collect them so we all could see how they were. This was a very unconventional way of working but I liked it and it kind of made sense to do that.
Some of the images have now appeared in one ( maybe more- I’m not sure) of Wolfgangs books too.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY KATE !!
