“I’M TOO SEXY”
Does Anyone Remember the Band ‘Right Said Fred’?
We’ve just had Mens Fashion Week SS16 in London (I worked on the Margaret Howell Show and the girls for the Burberry Prorsum Mens Collection.) and now all the models are in Milan and Paris.
#LCM sparked me off to think of this hilarious tune from 1991
Right Said Fred are an English band based in London and formed by brothers Fred and Richard Fairbrass in 1989. The group are named after the song which was a hit for Bernard Cribbins in 1962.
RSF sold over 20 million CDs sold worldwide and the group have achieved multi-platinum status and have won two Ivor Novello Awards for their songs “I’m Too Sexy” and “Deeply Dippy”
“I’m Too Sexy” was a piss take of the fashion industry and was a huge hit in the UK, spending six weeks at number two in the British Singles charts behind Everything I do I Do it For You by Bryan Adams and spent three months in the Top 10 in total. The song also went to number one in 32 other countries including the United States. The song earned the band its first Ivor Novello Award.
“I’m Too Sexy” is sung from the point of view of a narcissistic Male Fashion Model. ( Think Zoolander, which came later on in 2001) The song’s lyrics express (over-) confidence that his personal level of sexiness makes him too sexy for numerous things, most notably his shirt (“so sexy it hurts”). The list also includes “my love (love’s going to leave me)”, “Milan, New York, and Japan”, “your party (no way I’m disco dancing)”, “my car (too sexy by far)”, “my hat (what d’you think about that?)”, “my cat (poor pussy… poor pussycat)”, and the song itself: “…and I’m too sexy for this song”, at which point the song abruptly ends. This quote about the lyrics was taken from Wikipedia

In 2003 Beauty journalist and now co-owner/director of Beauty Mart, Anna Marie Solowij was Beauty director at British Vogue magazine.
Anna-Marie commissioned myself and Corinne Day to shoot a hair story for the August issue. She wanted something bold, very different and ultra modern.
We took the theme of dance, but instead of interpreting it in the obvious, super tight ballet bun world, Corinne and I decided to approach it with a much more contemporary feel. Taking elements of dance type hair and re-inventing them, making them wearable for the modern woman. Lisa Butler was on make-up and we decided to give all the girls a real “look”
This shoot is the outcome of it. I still love this shoot even now, and its one that a lot of people always remember as a “stand out” hair/beauty shoot for a magazine like Vogue.
