corinne-day-british-vogue-styling-kate-phelan-make-up-lisa-butler-model-jessica-miller-january-2003-006 #TBT ; I’M TAKING YOU BACK TO 2003 TODAY, JANUARY TO BE EXACT AND A SHOOT I WORKED ON FOR BRITISH VOGUE, WHICH TO THIS DAY IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITES….. IT STARS LAS VEGAS BORN MODEL JESSICA MILLER.

Born in Las Vegas, Nevada on the 21st of February 1984, Jessica is an American fashion model who is well known for her statuesque body and gorgeous long hair. At a fairly young age she landed a two-year contract deal with Calvin Klein and consequently became an overnight modeling star. In 2003, she received the prestigious Model of the Year prize at the International Awards, beating models Carmen Kass and Kate Moss in the same year. Its been noted that Jessica has striking resemblance to Jane Birkin.
This shoot took place in England and I remember talking to Jessica about her childhood when we getting her ready on the morning.. It transpired that her Mum was a Vegas showgirl which I was fascinated by. Jessica is also a big heavy metal fan and a total rock chick at heart. I think both those facts about her allowed her to express herself freely in modelling and played a huge part in her success.

I worked with Jessica on numerous occasions after this shoot and whilst I haven’t seen her in a while, I know seeing her again will be like seeing her only the day before.

So without further ado, ladies and gentlemen I give you the fabulous, the one and only Jessica Miller, who incidentally is now married to Metallica’s Lars Ulrich.

MOODS COMEDY MONDAY

With everyone running around the four fashion capitals of the world right now for fashion weeks, I thought what better way to celebrate than a bit of Ab Fab for todays “Moods Comedy Monday”.

This little sketch shows Patsy ( Joanna Lumley) going into the office of the magazine she works for and discussing the next issue with 2 other editors,  Fleur, brilliantly played by Harriet Thorpe and Catriona equally as brilliant,  played by Helen Lederer plus an Intern…….

Enjoy this fantastic bit of fashion comedy……

Happy Monday!!

MILAN FASHION WEEK – ERIKA CAVALLINI SHOW #MFW SS17

Posted by | Blog | No Comments

screen-shot-2016-09-29-at-07-36-25

TODAY I’M IN MILAN AND I’M WORKING ON THE ERIKA CAVALLINI FASHION SHOW.

HERE’S SOME IMAGES FROM THE SHOW AND A MINI REPORT BY ME.

A NOTE ON ERIKA: Over the past few years she has become something of a household name in her native Italy.  Worn by Kendall Jenner, amongst many others, the line created by Cavallini, has a mix of Italian classicism and refined sportswear. Its a style that has more and more women around the world flocking to wear her brand.

The collection had a Wild West feel about it. Layers of loose tiered ruffles in block colours peaked out from jackets in long camisole tops, or heavily tiered skirts. The soft, feminine ruffles were paired with quite masculine elements. Oversized suit jackets, military green heavy duty cotton, cargo trousers in camouflage print, layered with harness, or cinched in at the waits with thin leather belts, tied not buckled, gave the collection,  an “off-kilter militarism” as quoted by Erika.

The hair I created we called ” Day after hair” taking the idea that the girls hair had been slept on after being “done” the day before, this creating little imperfections in the hairstyles. Those imperfections are actually perfect and gave the girl all a little of their own character. If their hair was maybe a little curlier underneath than on top then we would encourage that.

Products used were:

Windle and Moodie Foundation Spray, Fortifying Spray, Thickening Cream, Invisible Day and Night Cream and WAM Revolving Irons.

Because of the individualism of each girl, I cannot really give you a step by step how to, but should you want to try this look at home, just embrace your natural texture and add some imperfections or don’t be afraid to exaggerate them.

#TBT FROM MY EDITORIAL ARCHIVE ITALIAN VOGUE NOV 1999- ELAINE CONSTANTINE.

Posted by | Blog | No Comments

elaine-constantine-italian-vogue-make-up-debbie-stone-fashion-editor-cathy-kasterine-1999-002

TODAY’S EDITORIAL ARCHIVE IS ANOTHER ITALIAN VOGUE CLASSIC BY ELAINE CONSTANTINE FROM NOVEMBER 1999.

Elaine’s photography often put young people in situations you would expect to find them in whilst showing off exaggerated expressions, body language and colour. She would recollect memories from growing up and re-appropriate them into her photography. That personal element is what gave her pictures the edge of which many people tried to emulate but never achieved.

This shoot took place on the Isle Of Wight which is not only a county but  the largest and second most populated island in England. Located in the English Channel, it’s approx 4 miles (6 km) off the coast of Hampshire separated from the mainland by the Solent.

I remember it being pretty cold when we were shooting as it was coming up to Winter and it was very windy there. Even though the models were really cold ( wearing mainly summer outfits) Elaine managed to capture fun and energy from the models, allowing the freezin weather to go undetected in any of the shots.

JUST ANOTHER MOODIE MONDAY – FATTY BUM BUM – CARL MALCOLM

Posted by | Blog | No Comments

screen-shot-2016-09-19-at-13-30-37

HAPPY MONDAY PEOPLE.

It’s fashion week in London right now and in typical media fashion they’ve brought up the boring age old story about Size zero models. It drives me nuts because it’s such lazy journalism on all levels because

a) size zero is a media created word, it doesn’t actually exist – Size Zero would mean “no size at all”, kind of like air or something.

and

b) can they not think of anything else to say about fashion week???? Anorexia exists all year around not just when fashion weeks are on and its such lazy journalism to bring it up again around this time ’cause its an easy target.

Come on journalists, news shows, etc, surely you can stick your neck out a bit and think of something else to say at this time of year and then lets talk about and address anorexia all year round instead as it is a big issue, that is not just caused by fashion week and models.

So to celebrate all sizes of models, people and the universe here;’s a great song from the 70’s called “Fatty Bum Bum” by Carl Malcolm. Celebrating the bigger bum.

Due to the age of the song,  there’s no official video for it but here’s a Youtube link to the track at least.

The song was was released in September 1975 . This was picked up for release by independent label UK Records after Dave Cash started to play it on his Capital Radio programme, and it quickly got to number 2 on the station’s ‘Hitline’ listeners’ chart. It eventually reached number 8 on the UK Singles Charts and remained in the charts  for eight weeks.

Have a bop and a boogie and please have fun……..

#LFW – JULIEN MCDONALD SHOW

IT’S LONDON FASHION WEEK, AND I’M NOT DOING ANY SHOWS HERE ( ALL TO DO WITH SPONSORSHIP DEALS GOING ON EVERYWHERE WHICH I PREFER NOT TO TALK ABOUT……..)

So, instead of doing any here in my home town I decided to go and see one, and I could think of no better show spectacular than my friend, queen of sparkle, Julien Mcdonald, being styled by one of my oldest and dearest friends Karl Plewka.

With Hair and make up genius’s Sam McKnight and Val Garland on the beauty money, it was guaranteed as a goody. Opening the show was new US model sensation Hayley Baldwin and  Front row was  Chris Mears and Tom Daley, Olympic Divers, Abbey Clancy, Ellen Von Unworth, Fearne Cotton, Thom Evans and Amber Le Bon.

Anyway here’s some pics from the star studded event and my favourite of all moments to be honest, I met and had a chat with the amazing rubber artist Pandemonia. Rather than me trying to review the show badly, I’ve copied and pasted Aimee Farrell’s review from Vogue Runway.

 Aimee Farell review below:

“When I go to Africa, I don’t go on my own,” said the preternaturally ageless Welsh designer Julien McDonald  after his Spring 2017 show. “I go with the Rolling Stones and Kanye and Beyonce. This is Julien’s Africa!” Flanked by his shiny army of luminous models inside Marylebone’s cavernous Seymour Leisure Centre, Macdonald is as much a star of his particular show as the rappers and social media and reality television stars who so loyally inhabit his front row. And among the fanfare, you could visibly see the likes of Olympic diver Tom Daley (freshly tanned post-Rio) and Amber Le Bon (whose fun, newly pink hair made her barely recognizable) making mental shopping lists straight from the runway.

This season’s high-octane girl hailed from the Kenyan plains of the Maasai Mara reserve. “It’s a rock ’n’ roll interpretation of Afro-chic that is glam and fun,” said Macdonald before turning to plant a kiss on photographer Ellen Von Unworthy “My Africa is metallic and gold and glitter and studs and everything you wouldn’t expect to find there.” The collection included pale pink, armor-like iterations of snakeskin, animalistic ombré metallic fringing, and textural slate tones on risqué dresses that revealed much more than they concealed. There was much artistry here, though few surprises. But for Macdonald’s devoted band of red carpet lovelies—of which he most recently counts Britney Spears and Emily Ratajkowski—that’s exactly the point.

SPICE UP YOUR LIFE

Melanie Jayne Chisholm (born 12 January 1974) was 1/5 of the girl group Spice Girls. nicknamed Sporty Spice due to her sporty appearance. She was born in Merseyside later moving to Chesire at a young age. Following school, she studied for a diploma course in dance, singing, drama, and musical theatre at the Doreen Bird College of Performing Arts in Southeast London.

Together with the other Spice Girls, Melanie responded to an advertisement in The Stage to form a girl band.   In 1995 they  signed a deal with Virgin. Their debut album, Spice was a huge worldwide commercial success, peaking at number one in more than 17 countries across the world and was certified multi platinum in 27 countries. The album centered on the idea of Girl Power  and was compared to Beatlemania in the 60’s.  In total the album sold over 30 million copies worldwide and became the biggest-selling album in music history by a girl group and one of the most successful albums of all time.

Following the success of their 2nd album the group also starred in their own film, Spiceworld, The Movie which grossed $100 million at the box office worldwide.

Following the departure of Geri Haliwell ( Ginger Spice) from the group in May 1998 they continued to perform as a quartet, but in Nov 1998 Melanie released a duet with Bryan Adams called When You’re Gone which was certified platinum in the UK.

This sparked Mel to go off and make a solo album. Her debut album, Northern Star was released on 18 October 1999, peaked at number four and sold 4 million copies worldwide. Since releasing her 1st solo album in 1999, Mel has gone on to release 5 more albums as well as being part of the Spice Girls reunion in 2007, with her seventh album about to be released next month. Melanie C has sold more than 12 million records worldwide as a solo artist.

Her second album Reason was released in March 2003, which is where I come in. For the album and single covers Melanie and her record label commissioned my mate Sean Ellis as the official photographer. Sean, as some of you may have seen on my blog recently has now made the switch from fashion photographer to film director, writing and directing the WWII film Anthropoid that is currently on cinema release worldwide starring Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan.

A behind the scenes video was made of the shoot and here it is below. The images throughout this post are from the shoot and used as promotion for the album and single releases.

MY EDITORIAL ARCHIVE #TBT ITALIAN VOGUE JUNE 1999 – ELAINE CONSTANTINE.

TODAY WE’RE DELVING INTO MY EDITORIAL ARCHIVE FOR #TBT.

ELAINE CONSTANTINE IS ONE OF THE PROLIFIC FASHION PHOTOGRAPHERS THAT EMERGED FROM THE BRITISH FASHION SCENE IN THE LATE 90’S.

A huge fan of the Northern Soul scene in Manchester where she grew up, she was asked to work for The Face magazine after being Nick Knights assistant, by then Art Director Lee Swillingham who commissioned her first fashion editorial. Elaine’s youthful and energetic style introduced a new generation of younger photographers to Face readers. According to Elaine, her work “came at a point when people had seen grunge fashion for a few years and needed something else to look at”

Elaine is also credited as writing and directing the film Northern Soul where she returned to Manchester to tell the story of two Northern boys in the 70’s whose lives changed forever when they discover black American soul music.

This shoot is one of Elaine’s classic energetic shoots where girls are having fun and hanging out.  I don;’t remember the location where we shot it, if I find out, I’ll add it into the text at a later date.

JUST ANOTHER MOODIE MONDAY – RAY OF LIGHT, MADONNA

JUST ANOTHER MOODIE MONDAY

I’M NOT GONNA LIE, I DONT LOVE THE MUSIC MADONNA MAKES THESE DAYS, BUT IT WASN’T THAT LONG AGO THAT SHE WAS PULLING IN THE BEST PRODUCERS FOR HER MUSIC WHO KNEW EXACTLY WHAT TO DO WITH IT AS SHE PROGRESSED FROM THE EARLY YEARS OF STEVEN BRAY.

MASSIVE ATTACK, WILLIAM ORBIT, STUART PRICE AND MIRWAIS ALL HELPED TO MAKE SOME OF MADONNA’S MOST PROLIFIC ALBUMS AND TODAYS’  “JUST ANOTHER MOODIE MONDAY” TRACK IS LIFTED FROM HER ALBUM TITLED “RAY OF LIGHT” RELEASED IN 1998. THIS IS THE WILLIAM ORBIT PRODUCED ALBUM AND FOR ME IS ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS SHE EVER MADE.

“Ray of Light” is based on Curtiss Maldoon’s Sepheryn and is an electronic dance song with techno, trance, Eurodance, and disco influences. The song is about freedom and the fantastic video was directed by Jona Akerlund showing scenes of different cities around the world, with Madonna singing in front of them. The video received the Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video, as well as gaining five awards at the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards too.

This song is perfect for Monday mornings and the video also gets you ready for the day………

Enjoy, oh and have a boogie too………
