#TBT: MT ADVERTISING ARCHIVE – JIGSAW BY JUERGEN TELLER 1995

Posted by | Blog | No Comments

Jigsaw - Juergen Teller, Styling Venetia Scott - 020

Back In the 90’s 2 new models arrived on the scene that everybody wanted to shoot. One of them was a feisty Belgian girl known as Tanga and the other a quieter but fun Dutch school girl called Lonneke.

Lonneke was discovered by photographer Bruce Weber at the age of 13 and when we shot the Jigsaw campaign she was 14 at the time and being chaperoned by her father to every shoot she was on, but people fell in love with the way she looked.  She was dough eyed with long brown hair.

Tanga Moreau was discovered in Brussels and reluctantly didn’t want to model but this gap toothed beauty eventually succumb and went on to become one of the big models of the 90s .

Both Tanga and Lonneke went on to be contracted to Ralph Lauren as the faces of the brand, even thought their lois couldn’t have been more different.

In the 90’s Jigsaw had become a huge British High Street Brand, also launching a mens wear line to huge success. Designer Chris Bailey ( Not to be confused with Christopher Bailey from Burberry) was brought in and launched the menswear label for them employing Juergen Teller to shoot the campaign. From then Juergen went on to short the women’s campaign and this was the first one.

Stylist Venetia Scott ( Juergen’s long term ex girlfriend) myself and Dick Page on Make -up were all brought in to work on the campaign which we shot in Berlin. It was my first time in Berlin and I was really excited to visit.

Lonneke became more the star of the campaign over Tanga, I think they just felt her look worked better with the clothes.

Anyway, here’s the results from that campaign, taken from the Jigsaw Book they produced that you could obtain in the stores at the time.

PATRICIA ROUTLEDGE CBE (born 17 February 1929), is an English actress, singer and author . She is best known for her role as Hyacinth Bucket in the British television series Keeping Up Appearances, which ran from 1990 to 1995. On television, she came to prominence during the 1980s in monologues written by Victoria Wood and Alan Bennett, appearing as Kitty in Victoria Wood As Seen On TV (1985–86).  Kitty was originally written by Julie Walters as a character called Dotty played by Julie Walters-  I’ve run the three sketches of Dotty throughout May and one at the beginning of this month if you want to go back and watch them……..

Q&A WITH MAKE UP ARTIST EXTRAORDINAIRE MARLA BELT

Posted by | Blog | No Comments

Screen Shot 2015-07-17 at 11.46.34

MARLA BELT LADIES AND GENTLEMEN IS A RARE SPECIMEN. SHE HAS SLOWLY WORKED HER WAY UP THE RANKS IN A VERY QUIET AND SOPHISTICATED MANNER TO BECOME ONE OF THE NEW FLEET OF LEADING MAKE-UP ARTISTS.

With one foot originally in Burleque, she graduated from Parsons and went to work for MAC Cosmetics. She helped various people do their make-up, but not just your average Joe on the street, she was teaching clients from all walks of life and the staff. She eventually went on to assist make-up guru, Pat McGrath, where they shared a complete love of all things make-up.

Marla gained her Pat badges ( in true apprentice fashion, for approx 5 years- not your 6 months dipping in and out hobby then telling the world you assisted somebody big)  and then she went solo, only to be taken on  immediately and represented by Pat’s agent Beverley at Streeters.

I’ve worked with Marla a few times since she went solo, and although she’s very quiet, unassuming and adorable to be around,  her talent for applying make-up is second to none. She has some of the best all round make-up  skills I’ve seen in the business, and her work totally reflects that.

I’m going to let Marla do the rest of talking from now on, so enjoy a small delve into the world of …………….

 MARLA BELT.

WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE GROWING UP?

I remember as young as 4 wanting to be a nurse. I was always obsessed with them: my favourite book was a Florence Nightingale biography and I would draw images of bunnies and cats wearing nurse outfits & high heels all over my bedroom door lol. As I got older, I was torn between wanting to be a surgeon and an artist. I could have combined the two professions to be a plastic surgeon I suppose but makeup always inspired me more,

HOW DID YOU BEGIN TO DO MAKE-UP ?

After graduating from Parsons in 1994, I started working at MAC on Christopher St. and when MAC Pro opened in 1998, I was there as an artist, helping make up artists, performers, and other professionals with products as well as teaching classes for staff & customers alike. Then, in 2005, I left MAC to assist top makeup artists for shows & editorials. It was thrilling to work on these high fashion shoots & travel to Milan & Paris 4 times a year for shows. Now, I’m on my own, signed to Streeters London and excited to see my career unfold.

HOW DIFFERENT DO YOU THINK YOUR MAKE-UP CAREER WOULD’VE BEEN IF YOU HADN’T WORKED WITH PAT MCGRATH, AND DO YOU FEEL MORE PRESSURE ON YOU PERSONALLY AT WORK, HAVING BEEN HER ASSISTANT?

I think it would have been harder to get the experience and fashion connections to rise to the next level. I gained so much experience working with Pat on shows and editorials and really honed my skills as an artist. That’s something so invaluable in this industry. Maybe people expect a lot from me, knowing I assisted Pat, but I don’t feel pressured. I bring my own voice & skills, which are very evident in my work.

WHAT ARE YOU INTO RIGHT NOW (  MUSIC, FASHION , ART,  FOOD

For music, I’m really into Christian music and bands like Casting Crowns,

Chris Tomlin and Hillsong as well as classical music. My favourite

composers are Chopin, Erik Satie, and Fritz Kreisler. For fashion, I’ve

always been into vintage styles from the 30s-50’s as well

as 70’s & 80’s styles that mimic 30’s & 40’s. In Art, one of the styles that

inspire me most is German Expressionism. I really love their bold abstract

use of colour as well as the political and social economic statement. My

faves are Otto Dix, Egon Schiele, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, and George

Grosz. I’m currently into juicing with my Vitamix, mostly kale, parsley,

cucumber, lemon and lots of ginger. It’s my favourite thing for breakfast.

MOODS COMEDY MONDAY – KENNY EVERETT AS CUPID STUNT ON PARKINSON

Posted by | Blog | No Comments

imgres

IT’S MONDAY AGAIN…..

And I had to start this week with one of my favourite alternative comedians from the 80’s, Kenny Everett.

Cupid Stunt was a character Kenny created for his TV show. I featured Kenny as Cupid in March this year on Mood’s Comedy Monday and here’s another great sketch of Kenny playing Cupid being interviewed for real in one of the old British classic Chat Shows hosted by Michael Parkinson.

You can see what havoc Kenny used to cause, and how by being in character he could create more havoc than normal

and “it’s all done in the best possible taste”

SUPERMODELS 31. TODAY – AMBER VALLETTA

Posted by | Blog | No Comments

Screen Shot 2015-07-08 at 23.31.50

TODAY I’M STARTING A NEW MONTHLY POST CALLED  “SUPERMODELS 31”

What is this I hear you cry???????

Well, I recently discovered that only 31 models within the fashion industry have made the covers of all 4 of the top Vogues in the World within their modelling careers, those 4 being- American Vogue, British Vogue, French Vogue and Italian Vogue.

I’m going to be listing these 31 models together with their biogs and some of the most popular images from shoots they have worked on, plus some images of work I’ve down with them.

I’m going in alphabetical order, so first off is American beauty Amber Valletta. who became famous in the 90’s and was claimed by Time magazine to have the most symmetrical face out of all the supermodels at the time, after putting all their faces into a computer to numerically work out their facial features.

Amber Evangeline Valletta was born on February 9, 1974 in Phoenix Arizona and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma.  She started in the fashion industry when her mother enrolled her in modeling school at the age of fifteen at the Linda Layman Agency, landing her first of sixteen American Vogue covers by the age of eighteen. During the 1990s, she reached the status of Supermodel, after becoming the face of Calvin Klein’s Eternity fragrance, Armani, Chanel, Prada, Gucci and Versace, and hosted MTV’s House Of Style with fellow model and friend Shalom Harlow. Amber was one of the most recognizable faces of her generation and was presented on the November 1999 Millennium cover of American Vogue as one of the “Modern Muses”.

She became the face of Prada for 3 seasons with the now iconic campaigns shot by Glen Luchford.

She continues to work as a fashion model, most recently closing the Atelier Versace Spring 2015 fashion show as well as acting in both film and TV shows. She currently stars in  in the ABC prime time soap opera, Blood and Oil, playing the role of Darla Briggs, the glamorous business partner and new wife of oil tycoon Hap Briggs played by Don Johnson.

I have worked with Amber on a few occasions, for Vogue, W, Allure Magazine and various advertising shoots. Below is my US Vogue shoot I worked on with her, which was the first time I met her.

Amber was married to Christian ( Chip) McCAw and they have a son together. They divorced early this year and she is currently dating hairstylist Teddy Charles.

WIMBELDON MENS FINAL 2015

Djokovic-2

TODAY WE SAW A DRAMATIC, TENSE MENS WIMBLEDON MENS FINAL BETWEEN NOVAK DJOKOVIC THE WORLD NUMBER 1 AND ROGER FEDERER THE WORLD NO 2.

THE WINNER WAS NOVAK DJOKOVIC WINNING HIS 3RD WIMBLEDON TITLE AND 9TH GRAND SLAM WIN.

Like women’s tennis, the mens has been known for its fashion moments over the years, more recently with Rafael Nadal who is widely regarded as the greatest clay court player in history, winner of 14 Grand Slams in total and titled “The King of Clay” , being the most recent leader of mens tennis fashion with his array of very colourful outfits and headbands.

With Fred Perry,  Rene Lacoste and Bjorn Borg all former tennis players going on to launch their own range of clothing with extreme success, it’s no wonder that mens tennis fashion is huge.

We’ve also seen Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Andy Murray as 3 of the most recent top players who have had their own lines within a bigger brand.

Nike , Adidas, and even Uniqlo are all doing their best to create the perfect tennis fashion and below I’ve collated some of the best mens tennis looks I could find, dating back through the decades.

I hope you enjoy and that you’ve enjoyed watching Wimbledon these last 2 weeks also……..

Congratulations to all the winners.

WIMBLEDON_Serena-W_3372289k

YESTERDAY THE WOMENS WIMBLEDON SINGLES FINAL WAS BETWEEN WORLD NO 1 SERENA WILLIAMS AND NEW UNKNOWN WORLD NO 20 GABINE MUGURUZA

Serena was the eventual winner, ( although Muguruza put up a good fight for her first grand slam final)  winning her 21st Grand Slam final, her third of the year and going for the year grand slam which will means she will have to win the US Open in September.

As any tennis fan will know, the attire at Wimbledon for all players Male and Female is White. With no colours at all.

Tennis fashions have become quite synonymous with the sport over the years and I’ve compiled some of the best women’s tennis fashions seen over the years. Serena and her sister Venus have upped the anti over more recent years in the tennis fashion stakes but there were some great ones and some corkers from every decade.

Below is just a few I’ve found and edited for you………. Hope you enjoy!!

It includes the Williams sisters, Chris Evert, Maria Sharapova, Tracy Austin, Sue Barker, Gussie Moran, Karol Fegeros, Lea Perricoli, Lili De Alverez and more…..

Tomorrow it’s the turn of mens tennis fashion.

#TBT EDITORIAL ARCHIVE – SCARLETT JOHANSSON BY CORINNE DAY FOR VOGUE GB.

Posted by | Blog | No Comments

DRdzUGJdTuZQesktzpQgjUW2Us3fRIaHXGmLu2C9Itk

In 2004 a new young actress appeared on the Hollywood scene, following a series of smaller parts she played as a youngster.

She made her debut as an actress at the tender age of 9 in a film called North, then when she was 11 in 1996, she played the role of Amanda in Manny and Lo (1996). Her performance gained her a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Lead Female, following a few other roles she shifted to adult roles in the early 90’s with her performances in Girl With a Pearl Earring (2003) and Sofia Coppola’s Lost In Translation for which she won the BAFTA for Best Actress in a Leading Role alongside her lead, the amazing Bill Murray. She was also nominated for A Golden Globe for this film.

She was born in New York. Her father, Karsten Johansson, is a Danish-born architect originally from Copenghagen and her paternal grandfather, Ejner Johansson, was a screenwriter and director. Her mother, Melanie Sloan, a producer, comes from an Ashkenazi Jewish family from the Bronx. Her ancestors were Jewish immigrants from both Poland and Minsk in the Russian Empire She has an older sister, Vanessa, also an actress; an older brother, Adrian; a twin brother, Hunter (who appeared with her in the film Manny and Lo, and an older half-brother, Christian, from her father’s first marriage

That Actress is Scarlett Johansson.

The Day after she won the BAFTA for Lost in Translation I was booked to work with her for her first British Vogue cover, with my friend Corinne Day as the photographer.

Scarlett arrived a tad hungover, after rightfully celebrating her win. She had bleached hair and a grown out undercut. She looked great but we had to Vogue her up slightly.

These pictures were the result for that day. Scarlett loved them so much her people but the rights to the images afterwards and they appeared on the cover of Harpers Bazaar Portugal, and various other Vogues around the country.
