MODEL’S AND STUFF – 90’s SENSATION, NADJA AUERMANN

Posted by | Blog | No Comments

nadja-by-patrick-demarchelier-1994

German born Nadja Auermann is known for having the longest legs in the business…..45inches to be exact. She once held the record for being the model with the longest legs in the world in the Guinness Book of World Records, and was apparently known as the Stalk.

She was discovered in a cafe in Berlin in 1990, where she signed to Karin Modelling Agency in Paris.  In 1991, she moved from Karin to Elite Model Management.  She was then photographed for Vogue Paris and appeared in the Benetton ads.

Working with photographic legends such as fellow Berliner, Helmut Newton, Peter Lindbergh, Herb Ritts, Richard Avedon, Steven Meisel and Nick Knight and covering a vast amount of magazine covers such as Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, ID and W magazine, her changing style personified the spirit of the 90’s. Dying her hair platinum blonde created a booking frenzy for Nadja and the fashion world really took notice. In September 1994, she appeared on the cover of both American Vogue and  and US Harpers Bazaar, a feat rarely achieved on this particular month by models.

Today we’re celebrating the career of this thoroughbred of supermodels ( who recently made a comeback)  with some of the most famous images of her work and a George Michael video she appeared in, “Too Funky”.

 Take a look

Here Nadja is included on a recent Japanese Vogue Cover (Sept 2014 Issue)  with the other 90’s Supers, Claudia Schiffer, Stephanie Seymour, Linda Evangelista and Naomi Campbell.

FUNNY HAIR VIDEO WITH MY MATE NICK DOREY

Posted by | Blog | No Comments

I was just in LA the other  week, working with my mate, photographer Nick Dorey and at the end of the last shoot day we were on the roof of the studio where we had been working and I decided to record Nick with his long hair in slo-mo, just to have some fun.

Anyway, when I arrived back home, I decided to edit the video and put it to music. Here’s the result of that editing and I’ve decided to call it my Windle and Moodie Coachella Festival Hair video, as Nick was off to Coachella that evening.

As they used to say on my favourite morning TV show in the 90’s: Don’t phone or email, it’s just for fun people….hahaha !!

MOODS COMEDY MONDAY – DAFFYD – THE ONLY GAY IN THE VILLAGE, LITTLE BRITAIN

Matt Lucas has to be one of the funniest people in Britain right now, and when him and David Walliams created Little Britain, their eagle had finally landed. The characters they created were dark and funny. They took comedy observation to its extreme, and this particular character Daffyd was no exception.

This was the first episode of Matt Lucas’s DAFFYD character, “Im the only Gay in the Village” with David Walliams.

Kent Baker Inferno Book

Word on the street is that there’s a huge Alexander McQueen exhibition on at the V&A in London…….. LOL

Well, there’s also another one showing right now in London too that’s worth going to see. It’s actually based on a book created by my good mate, photographer Kent Baker. The books titled Inferno – Alexander McQueen

The book is a set of images documenting McQueens seminal A/W 96/97 Dante show in London that took place in London.

There’s an exhibition of prints from the book, curated by Olly Walker and Futurecity for the Gallery at Foyles, ( Foyles Flagship Book Store) on  Level 5, 107, Charing Cross Road, London.WC2H 0DT ,   running until Sunday 3rd May 2015. The gallery is open 7 days a week. I highly recommend a visit down there.

MY EDITORIAL ARCHIVE – BRITISH VOGUE WITH ISELIN STEIRO BY LAURIE BARTLEY

Posted by | Blog | No Comments

Laurie Bartley - British Vogue, Stylist Kate Phelan, Make Up Lisa Houghton, Model Iselin Steiro, August 2005 - 001

Ten years ago, I went to Cairo in Egypt for the first time,  to shoot for British Vogue with up and coming photographer of the time Laurie Bartley and new model sensation Iselin Steiro.

The trip was eventful to say the least. First off all the clothes got held up by customs in Egypt and the lovely fashion editor Kate Phelan spent the whole of what was meant to be the first day of the shoot, with her assistant, at the airport trying to negotiate with the customs officers to get the clothes released.

They were being very tricky apparently and we almost didn’t get the clothes at all. So after losing a day of shooting, we finally began to get going and all was moving along swiftly but on the last day myself and one of the photo assistants woke up with very bad food poisoning. I don;t need to describe the symptoms, as I’m sure you can well imagine, but lets just say I became so dehydrated I pretty much collapsed and had to be taken to hospital and put on a saline drip for 2 hours to rehydrate me.

I eventually returned to the shoot feeling quite weak, but it was the last day of shooting and we were all flying home the next day. Everybody was desperate to get home after what had been an eventful few days, but when this gorgeous shoot came out, it all seemed worth it in the end.

MOODS COMEDY MONDAY- KERRY HOWARD- THEY’VE JUST BEEN REALLY RUDE TO SANDRA.

Happy Monday People.

KerryHoward006

Kerry Howard is a brilliant observational actress/comedienne. She is also the sister of the hilariously funny comedian Russell Howard.   It’s the first time I’ve featured Kerry on Moods Comedy Monday.

This cracks me up when I see it, because we all know somebody like this! I know I do.

Hope you enjoy and there’s more of Kerry to come in the future.

Q&A – COME MEET NONIE CREME, CREATOR OF NEW COSMETICS LINE “COLOUR PREVAILS”

Posted by | Blog | No Comments

474820171

NONIE CREME – first off, what a genius name to have!!

I met Nonie a few years back in London, through my agent Emma’s sister, Make-up artist extraordinaire, Sam Bryant.

Nonie was working on a show with Sam and I, she was doing manicures. I distinctly remember Sam saying, “come and meet Nonie Creme”  and I was there thinking, what the hell is she going on about?  I thought she’d named her new bag Nonie or something. I had no idea Nonie was actually a person. haha.

Anyway, all I remember is meeting this amazing, charismatic woman with a great energy, and looking pretty fantastic too. She looked like a rock star. Nonie has a soft transatlantic accent, switching from English to American without realising, due to the fact that she has a British husband and moved to London when she was fairly young.

Nonie, became a well known name in the fashion and beauty industry for not only being an amazing nail technician and manicurist on photo shoots and fashion shows, but also for becoming Founding Creative Director of Butter London.

Nonie, eventually left Butter London and has now set up a new cosmetics company that officially launches this month, across the whole of the US called Colour Prevails. One of the amazing things about Colour Prevails is that everything is under $20.

Nonie explains to you what Colour Prevails is etc below,  ( I won’t attempt to steal her thunder on that one), but one thing you do need to know is that when Colour Prevails went on sale online a few weeks ago ( before even being in stores)  it was already selling out. How Phenominal!!! I know a lot people will be praying that Colour Prevails will be coming to the UK!! :

Nonie explains all below.

So without further ado, Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, I give you Nonie Creme.  ( LOUD HAND CLAPPING PLEASE)

WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE GROWING UP?

A rock star. Not joking. I wanted to be the next Pat Benatar or Joan Jett. My friends and I started a girl band when we were 11. It was called Raw War. (So good, I know…) No one could play an instrument or sing.

HOW AND WHEN DID YOU BEGIN TO DO MANICURES AND NAIL ART?

I followed a boy to London and my parents were so angry that they cut me off. I was broke and scared, living in a London squat when I decided to learn to do nails to make some cash. I started my first nail business standing outside Liverpool Street Station every morning with a basket of nail supplies and some business cards. I’d hand out cards all morning, and by lunchtime I’d be fully booked doing deskside manicures for the suits. I have always been extremely tenacious! Hear the whole story by clicking HERE

IS THERE ANYBODY YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE IF YOU WEREN’T YOU?

Hmmm. That’s an interesting one. I’d like to be Mark Zuckerberg ( Creator of Facebook) . Imagine being so smart and so young, and playing in this global arena where you don’t ever have to work again, and you do it anyway because you just can’t help yourself. Tech dudes are the new rock stars.

WHERE DO YOU CURRENTLY LIVE?

I split my time between the west coast (Seattle), and the east coast (New York). My home and family are in Seattle, and my new company, Colour Prevails,  is NYC based. It’s one hell of a commute, but I’m very grateful to get the best of both ends of America! So, technically, I live on Delta.

WHEN AND HOW LONG DID YOU LIVE IN LONDON FOR?

I lived in London from 1995 until about 2008.  I started commuting to the USA in 2006… I left my British husband in London and commuted back and forth until 2008 when I had a baby. I feel very at home in the UK. I feel more Brit than I do Yank to be honest. PS: My husband is the Brit rave kid I followed to London over 20 years ago.

YOU JOINED “BUTTER LONDON” IN 2006, AND CREATED A HIGH DESIGN, NAIL LACQUER COMPANY. WHEN DID YOU LEAVE THE COMPANY AND WHEN AND WHY DID YOU MOVE TO THE US?

A Well…It’s a little known fact that Butter London is actually USA based company! I left the UK to come and join Butter as the Founding Creative Director in Seattle. It was like hitting a cultural brick wall. I had a very tough time with that transition! But here I am, now a Seattleite mom and loving every minute.

Screen Shot 2015-04-13 at 16.27.50

HAVING SET UP ONE COMPANY WERE YOU RELUCTANT TO DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN?

Not even for a second. I learned so much creating the Butter London brand, that it would be crazy not to use that knowledge to take shot at the mass market. Is it easy? God no, it’s hard, it’s risky, and it can cost you a lot of stomach lining, but I crave the excitement and love what I do more than I can even describe.

WHAT IS THE FULL CONCEPT OF COLOUR PREVAILS AND WHAT MAKES IT DIFFER FROM OTHER BRANDS?

Colour Prevails is a prestige colour cosmetics company that boasts luxury formulations, patented, innovative packaging, and a brand philosophy that encourages self-expression and inclusivity. Oh yes…. did I mention that it’s exclusively sold at Walgreen’s Group holdings in the USA and costs about a quarter of what you’d expect?!! I designed this range to stop shoppers in their tracks and make the ask “ What is this doing here?” In the USA prestige brands can not typically be found at your local chemist, so this is a real revolution.

WHEN IS IT LAUNCHING AND WILL IT BE AVAILABLE IN THE UK?

In the USA we are now launched and rolling out 300 stores a week for the next 10 weeks – 3,000 stores by end of May (Ack!) I can tell you that Boots is now part of the Walgreen’s Group family and was acquired last year. I do not currently have distribution with Boots, but it’s something I’m dreaming of. You will be the first to know!

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING IN YOUR CITY WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Seattle is known for being an unfriendly city, and I have to admit, as a really friendly person, I agree. It took me 8 years to find my people and I cherish them utterly. I wish Seattle would loosen up dammit, and let people in!!

Screen Shot 2015-04-13 at 16.29.15

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR OWN  WORK ?

I am very thoughtful in my work. I try to examine very single angle of a project or product before putting it out to be sure that it resonates aesthetically, is formulated ethically, and that is makes sense from a business perspective. I am fascinated by business, and have learned over the years to be pragmatic in what I do – that’s hard for a Creative! Sometimes I have to let an idea go because of the cost of manufacture or because it doesn’t make sense for my retailer. The “old” me would cry and throw staplers and break shit over that, but now I just accept that the health of my business takes precedence over my (much reduced) ego!

WHAT ARE YOU INTO RIGHT NOW (MUSIC, FASHION, ART, FOOD)

I am a Rick Owens wearing, Pho eating, Ray Caesar loving, punk and rave music geek.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ANIMALS?

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well, Ok, I have a fish named Big Red, and two frogs. I don’t do pets. I have a kid, that’s enough work, thanks!

WHAT MUSIC WERE YOU INTO GROWING UP AND ARE YOU STILL INTO IT NOW?

See above! I was a die-hard rave kid in the early 90’s and the punk rocker in me is constantly in battle against my inner raver. I love Dag Nasty mixed with Calvin Harris.

The Outsiders by Coppola. The film of my teen years. I must have watched it a hundred times.

Tropic Thunder. There are no words, just watch it.

Parenthood. I have watched this a kid, as a teen, as a single woman, and as a mom. It resonates at every single age and time of my life. The best family movie ever!

The 40 year Old Virgin. Endless laughs. I adore Steve Carell.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE DESSERT?

My mom’s key lime pie

 DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN ONE WORD.

 Tenacious.

DO YOU HAVE A GUILTY PLEASURE, IF SO WHAT IS IT?

I am a serious martini drinker. It’s my religion. Dirty Grey Goose martini shaken with fresh jalapeños till it’s fiery hot. Two olives, up.

WHERE ARE YOU GOING TO NEXT?

I think Chicago, but at this point I barely even know where I am today! I travel a LOT. It’s hard to be a traveling mom, but I always get home for the weekend, and sleep with my daughter EVERY night.  It makes my husband crazy, but he can sod off.
