So it’s Glastonbury Festival this weekend after a 1 year gap, and my editorial archive today is a shoot I did at said festival in 2005, starring Gemma Ward photographed by Corinne Day, for British Vogue’s October issue in 2005.
WHAT A TRIP IT WAS…….
We were all very excited about going to Galstonbury, for many of us it was the first time there. Gemma came with her sister Sophie and we all drove down there on the Fri afternoon.
The plan was to shoot Gemma in various areas amongst the festival and to shoot some of the bands too. We had a big location bus to work from. The Vogue editor Kate Phelan had shot there before and had warned us it was going to be hard work. How right she was!! First and foremost, on the first night, the heavens absolutely opened up and the whole place was flooded. Luckily i was in a 70’s style caravan so didn’t get wet, but Corinne and her husband woke up in a pool of water in their yert as did some of the other team. When we all woke in the morning it was mayhem. Knee deep in water and mud, cold from the damp, but the show must go on as they say. We trudged around this little festival town in wellingtons and waterproof gear, getting verbally abused when carrying around the suitcases with Vogue stickers on, falling over in the mud and getting stuck.
We attempted one day to drive all the crew in a people carrier to one part of the festival to do a shot and as we started to drive in the one direction, so did a 100,000 odd crowd choose to rush in the opposite direction to see a band who were playing on the main stage. It was a scary claustrophobic moment in our lives as what seemed like millions of people were surrounding the van we were all crammed into, plus when we finally got to the spot Corinne wanted to shoot, we then had a small group of feminist activists hurling verbal abuse at Gemma and the rest of the team for just shooting in Glastonbury!
The festival’s newspaper, The Glastonbury Daily thanked God for the hideous weather on its front page headline for day 2, calling it Brown Friday because of all the mud, and then the weather slowly started to improve and by the last of our 4 days even though we were all quite exhausted by that point, it allowed us to get a lot of the shots done that were missed because of the weather conditions. Despite all those incidents, the shoot looked amazing.
I’ve always loved musical festivals, ( Reading Festival being one of my preferred favourites in the past ) but this was an experience like no other. Needless to say it was the last major festival I’ve been to, and the last Glastonbury, British Vogue have been to for a fashion shoot.
I look back on this shoot with fond, fond memories now, but at the time it was pretty stressful. The joys of Fashion!!!

AFRO’S NOT DEAD!
Afro textured hair has always been a fascination for me. I love the way it looks and it can often take on many shapes and guises.
There seems to be a return to afro hair again as I’ve discovered on my travels across the globe. People with this kind of hair are embracing it again. For many years now (with women mainly) there’s been a huge trend for black, mixed and multi racial women with afro hair to either relax it, perm it or hide it with a weave or a wig! Not anymore! Theres a shift towards embracing the texture again, for men too and here’s just a few examples I’ve seen on the streets recently.
Whilst at Munich airport a few weeks ago I also discovered a caucasian blonde lady with a tight perm, emulating the afro! Is the perm back?? Who knows……………..
Out this week is my new editorial starring the gorgeous Bette Franke photographed by super talented Sherif Hamza for the August 2013 issue of Japanese Vogue.
The beauty team was made up of the highly skilled make-up artist Benjamin Puckey, nails by Gina Edwards and hair by yours truly!
The styling is by the wonderful Giovanna Battaglia
On All Fours sees Buster taking on his new work role.
He’s always been very studious and desperately wanted to become my company secretary. Being old school, he didn’t want a computer, he preferred to go for the old fashioned typewriter, so I managed to find one on Ebay for him and I’ve set him up in his own little office.
Buster loves his routine and the thought of 9-5 job was very appealing for him. Only problem is that he gets a little bored of typing and answering the phones so I often hear a cry from his office of “Is it 5 o’clock yet?”
Anyway, here he is posing for the annual company photograph, with his Power Bob wig for effect.
MY STORY SO FAR……….. THE BOB IS BACK!!
Hi all, and Happy Saturday…….. In “My Story So Far ( and the haircuts)” I’m almost at the end of the fabulous 80’s and about to step into the grungey, ravey 90’s. I was desperately trying to grow my hair long again, as many male models had long hair back then and I wanted the same.
Having curly hair means that your hair takes twice as long to become long because of the shrinking of length when it dries, but as you can see, my curly mushroom was starting to take shape as a short curly bob.
This picture was taken by my old friend Lynn in 1989. I’d just started learning to drive and Lynn and I took ourselves to Clacton Upon Sea in Essex one Sunday in her Mini Metro, where I attempted to have a go at driving in the car park. It was a disaster and basically we gave up the driving lessons and just went on the funfair and took pictures of ourselves, trying to look cool.
