MY STORY SO FAR IN HAIRCUTS !!!!! -NOW THIS ONE IS SPECIAL

So, the last time you saw me in this series of photographs I had the short curly bob with blonde hi-lights. Well, in this photograph I was now coming to the end of my apprenticeship. The 80’s were in full swing and it was all about how obscure your hair, clothes and make-up could be. At the age of 17 my hair had reached a chin length bob and I was loving it, swinging it about all over the dance floors of the coolest London clubs ( I’d started to visit London on the weekends at this point to go clubbing). Then Stuart who I was training under wanted to give me what was known as the Umbello haircut or the Anti head as it was also known. This involved shaving off your front hairline and having length on the crown whether it be curly or straight so it want against the regular head shape that most hairdressers would work with. Championed by Trevor Sorbie and Vidal Sassoon as a haircut, I wanted it and I wanted it bad. So Stuart set out scissor over combing my fringe down to nothing.

In the picture you see here, i’d actually had my hair straightened with the giant straightening irons that existed in the 80’s- there was no ceramic technology back them. So what was my normal curly Antihead haircut, had become a straight one. I weirdly slung my denim jacket back to front over myself and had this photograph taken in Birmingham New Street’s train station’s photo booth.

I thought this photo, and I, were great at the time hahahaha…………. Oh the 80’s !!

Hello everyone, I’m back with my thoughts for the month………

Hello everyone, I’m back with my thoughts for the month……….

ARE YOU A BLOGGER OR ARE YOU A BLAGGER?? That is the question.

Its been a mad couple of weeks, being in New York and London for fashion weeks. I’m not in Milan and maybe going to Paris but lets see !!

Just before leaving for the New York shows I had a rather personal, upsetting incident where a certain “beauty blogger” posted a comment on her Twitter and linked my salon Twitter to the post, where she chose to slander our Windle and Moodie Revolving Curling Iron and the fact that hers had broken in less than a year and how disappointed she was

” ESP” as she had given it rave reviews!”  she stated

On this occasion I chose to reply which i rarely do, saying how disappointed I was with her brutal remarks and she only had to come to us directly as we are nice respectable people, and this is what people would do normally should an electrical item break within its guarantee period, instead of posting her thoughts publicly on Twitter . She then chose to come back at me with the following comment:

” My Brutal Words?! Excuse Me?! I’ve been nothing but raving about the styler and got multiple people to buy it too. I think I’ve got every right  to be annoyed with it breaking when I loved it so much”

However, when I challenged her to the fact that

a) she hadn’t paid for it as she got it as a gift at our launch evening for that specific product, we held specifically for bloggers

b) The said launch was held in Nov 2011 ( which she admitted to attending and receiving the iron), meaning that she had actually received the free gift over one year ago, therefore her comments were incorrect, invalid and in fact a lie.

and

c) The normal procedure is to take a broken product back to the company you got it from not just slag it off on Twitter and lie about the time frame you’d had it for.

After challenging her on these points she suddenly changed the tone within her comments asking if we would exchange the iron and she would happily pop into my salon to get another iron. I  stated that on this occasion we would be prepared to exchange them for her, which then led her to comment ( still on Twitter by the way for all the world to see) that our Revolving Irons, and I quote

“truly are the best curlers I’ve ever tried, holy grail all the way, forever”  and after thanking me “this will will just get you another raving review”

Having sent this blogger my email address asking her to email me her home address so I could send her another pair of our irons complimentary, I chose at this point not to respond any further.  As and when she emailed me, I had planned to request that she sent the said broken pair back to us, so we could try to see what the problem was. Strangely, I’ve not heard from the woman since!

This made me ask myself, is this someone who was just trying to blag another pair of Curling Irons from us and thought that if she publicly slandered us on Twitter it would provoke us to send her a new one??  ( and trust me we’ve had people trying many different methods to get a free pair) Well all it did was provoke me to challenge someone on a social media website which I’m absolutely not afraid to do,  especially if its about defending my own company or products that are being slandered in an unfair manner with incorrect facts.

Now let me tell you about Suzy Menkes! A fashion journalist of the highest accolade. Now 69 years old and still going from fashion show to fashion show like the intrepid reporter she is. For those that don’t know her, she is the Head Fashion Reporter and Editor for the International Herald and Tribune Newspaper, a position she’s impressively held since 1988 ( Bare with me reader, this will all make sense shortly)

Suzy Menkes photo SuzyMenkes_zps3465968c.jpegSuzy Menkes

Suzy Menkes was born in the UK.  In the 1960s, as a teenager she took herself off  to Paris to study dressmaking at Esmod. Watching her first couture show at Nina Ricci sparked her interest in high fashion.

On returning from Paris, she went to Cambridge University to read history and English literature. After Cambridge, she worked for The Times Newspaper reporting on fashion. Suzy has also written several books on British Royal Style

One of her trademarks is her Pompadour ( quiffed) hairstyle that she’s sported for years. She currently lives in Paris, and holds the Legion d’Honneur in France and a British OBE

Suzy has a reputation within the fashion industry for being considered fair and balanced with her reviews, with a lot of people often taking her reviews as the gospel word. If Suzy gives you a bad review, most designers begin to worry. A designer once refused to invite her to his show, taking offense at negative comments she’d written in a previous collection review although she did give positive comments too. Many people in the industry rallied behind her and boycotted the designer’s show as a result until the situation was resolved.

Giving you Suzy’s background right there, I think we can safely say that her knowledge and experience of the fashion industry and fashion design is second to none. I know the odd few to consider her views a little old fashioned at times these days, but all credit to Suzy for championing new designers when she thinks they are worthy and generally giving her honest journalistic view.

Where is Moodie going with this I hear you cry?? Well, during New York fashion week Suzy wrote a brilliant article  for the New York Times, T Magazine called “The Circus Of Fashion” which in a nutshell, was about the crowds fashion shows now draw outside their venues. She credits herself as one of the group of people from the 90’s known as the “black crows” , which was the clan of fashion people all dressed in Comme De Garcon and Yojhi . People would often whisper “whose funeral is it” she reported as they “lined up for the hip, underground presentations” . But what was interesting for me was how Suzy talks about the current muster of Fashion Peacocks now regularly seen outside fashion shows, being “Papped’ by the photographers and elevated to celebrity status.

I’ll leave you to read the genius article for yourself  ( see the link below) but one sentence i must quote Suzy on here is this:

“Many bloggers are — or were — perceptive and succinct in their comments. But with the aim now to receive trophy gifts and paid-for trips to the next round of shows, only the rarest of bloggers could be seen as a critic in its original meaning of a visual and cultural arbiter.”

She also quotes what she considers an old journalistic mantra:

“It isn’t good because you like it, you like it because it’s good”

I know that Suzy is specifically referring to fashion bloggers in her article but I think what she is saying indirectly applies to beauty bloggers too.   I am not against bloggers at all, in fact I am totally of the ilk that everybody is entitled to their own opinion, so much so that I began my own blog. So any other beauty bloggers reading this, before you start to consider having a pop at me ( as a recent beauty blogger did quite viciously on Twitter to a well respected and established blogging make-up artist I know)  please accept this article exactly for what it says. “ARE YOU A BLOGGER OR ARE YOU A BLAGGER ??”  Its merely a question that you should ask yourself. That’s all folks !!!

I was recently asked in an interview, what i thought were the key areas of importance with social media regarding the fashion/hair/make-up industry.  Within my answer i added.

” As a hairdresser within the fashion industry, I think its important to claim some of our professional territory back”

This is one of the reasons why I started my blog. What about you?

I want to thank Suzy Menkes for not just being Suzy Menkes, but for writing her great article for the New York Times T Magazine that reiterated my feelings towards the social media world we now live in and all have to embrace.

WELCOME TO MOODIE NEWS………… and “Things We Like” featuring 25 MAGAZINE …….

The delightful and hardworking supermodel Anja Rubik very kindly gave me a copy of the latest edition of her magazine “25” whilst she was in the UK last week during London Fashion Week, making a guest appearance at the joint party 25 magazine had with Wendy Rowe and also appearing in the Tom Ford show. Its definitely something I think you should all know about.

Anja and her husband Sasha Knezevic started working on the magazine in 2009 when one of Sasha’s friends acquired it and asked him for his help. Sasha is Creative Director and Anja the Editor and Fashion Director.  The 1st issue they worked on finally released in May 2012 with a launch party at the Cannes film festival. It featured only women photographers, taking on the subject of ‘Erotica’

This 2nd and latest issue is called “The Woman is Present” and is dedicated to women who have made a remarkable impact on the world today. It is beautifully presented in an embossed box where you pull out the magazine from inside that looks like an unbounded book.

The1st issue caused quite a stir with its erotic content causing some backlash, but Anja’s editors letter in this new issue says it all really. Quoting that the backlash to the 1st issue made her realise

“that our generation is more conservative than that of our parents”and

“The media operates on a paradox – its no secret- where selling the notion of unobtainable beauty is allowed, while portraits of women just being women are simultaneously shunned”  but she still wants to

“continue pushing the boundaries of what a female fashion magazine can be”

I support Anja all the way with her beliefs as a woman, and for women and urge you to go and seek out a copy to buy, of this beautiful magazine that she works so hard on. The images are beautiful and it makes for a very interesting read. It also is a great coffee table book and collectors item……..

ON JANUARY 31st 2013, ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVOURITE FEMALE VOCALISTS, ALISON MOYET ( SOLO ARTIST AND FORMERLY FROM ICONIC 80’S SYNTH BAND YAZOO, OR YAZ AS THEY WERE KNOWN IN THE US)  ANNOUNCED SHE WILL BE RELEASING A NEW ALBUM IN MAY OF THIS YEAR – HER FIRST IN 6 YEARS – BUT AS A LITTLE TREAT FOR FANS, ON MONDAY OF THIS WEEK, ON HER NEWLY RELAUNCHED WEBSITE (SEE THE LINK BELOW) SHE ANNOUNCED A FREE DOWNLOAD OFFER OF ONE OF THE NEW TRACKS IN EXCHANGE FOR JUST YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS IN ORDER TO RECEIVE FUTURE INFO ABOUT HER AND HER MUSIC.

THE TRACK “CHANGELING” IS A WELCOME RETURN TO HER POP/ELECTRONIC ROOTS OF THE 80’S, AND IT IS PRODUCED BY THE GREAT GUY SIGWORTH ( PRODUCER FOR: SEAL, BJORK, MADONNA, BRITNEY SPEARS, ALANIS MORRISETTE, SUGABABES AND FORMERLY ONE HALF OF THE NOUGHTIES ELECTRONIC DUO, FROU FROU)

Guy has produced the whole of Alison’s new album titled “the minute”

Alison has released the following statement about her new album:

“I avoided listening to anything during the process of writing and recording this album, choosing instead to be lead by my own melodic voice, the one I now find myself with 30-years-in. Guy Sigsworth returns me to a programmer’s world and marries it with perfect musicality. I have been waiting for him. We have made an album mindless of industry mores that apply to middle-aged women and have shunned all talk of audiences, demographics and advert jazz covers. This has easily been my happiest studio experience. Its a unique collection of captivating songs that incorporate elements of high-end modern pop, club sounds, R&B and electronic experimentation”

— Alison Moyet

SO WHERE DO I BEGIN WITH TODAYS Q&A STAR WHO IS MY VERY GOOD FRIEND NICOLA JOSS.

SO WHERE DO I BEGIN WITH TODAYS Q&A STAR WHO IS MY VERY GOOD FRIEND NICOLA JOSS.

NICHOLA IS ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE WHO IS A JACK OF ALL TRADES BUT UNUSUALLY A MASTER OF 99.9999% OF THEM.

She’s not just one of your run of the mill beauty therapists. She’s Global Ambassador for Sanctuary Spa, St Tropez and Slendertone.

Nichola has Biology and Physiology degrees, but not wishing to study anymore at the age of 19 she went and got herself a job at the famous Sanctuary Spa, an all women’s Spa based in Covent Garden ( I featured the Spa within my Valentines gift ideas last week).  In 2012 as the Spa celebrated its 35th year in business and a complete rebranding, masterminded by the Chief Executive of PZ Cussons and PR genius, Michelle Feeney,  Nichola was appointed to work for the Sanctuary Spa once again but this time as Global Brand Ambassador to actively participate in the creation of all new product and treatment development, exclusively offering her sought after skincare expertise.

Nichola was somebody I would often see on shoots in the ‘noughties’ doing manicures, but it soon became apparent that Nichola had a lot more tricks up her sleeve. She not only does manicure but also full body tans, lymphatic drainage massage facials ( which incidentally she’s done on me-I’m not going to lie,  it’s a little painful, but the results are incredible….). It’s a technique she learnt in Malaysia where she became the apprentice to a local lymphatic drainage therapy expert. She also does full body massage and if there’s anything you need to know about skin care then Nichola is the person to go to.

Being able to provide these kind of treatments, Nichola soon started to build up a celebrity clientele, which includes Scarlett Johannson, Hilary Swank, and Gwyneth Paltrow to name a few. Nichola is now one of the most sort after beauty therapists on the awards circuit, working regularly on celebrities for the BAFTA’s and the OSCARS, in fact she’s in LA right now preparing to work on those very celebrities for this Sunday’s 85th Academy Awards ceremony. She has already been working again on the fashion weeks circuit this season. Did I forget to mention that she still also manages to work on fashion shoots with Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and Dazed and Confused Covers as well as Chloe and Dior Make-up ads within her portfolio of work.

On top of all of that, Nichola is a mother to 2 adorable young boys who are a credit to her and her husband ( I’m sure they’d disagree with that at times). There is no stopping this Wonder Mom!!!  Its not easy to get an appointment with Nichola but her assistant will try her hardest to fit you in, so should you attempt to try after reading this then just persist. You will get an appointment eventually, you just have to be a little patient- its worth the wait though.  Appointment details are below after the interview.

Well, I’m now out of breath telling you all about Nichola so I’ll let her take it away now……………
